Atemi is a term used in the Japanese Martial Arts that describes a percussive strike using any part of the body such as a punch, kick, open hand strike, elbow or knee strike. Atemi is often used in Aikido and Jujutsu as a way to shock or stun an opponent before executing a lock or throw. It also used as an attack or counter attack in Japanese martial arts styles such as Karate and Taijutsu.
