Instructions for a Shotokan Back Stance or Kokutsu Dachi

This page provides details on how to do a Shotokan back stance (or Kokutsu Dachi in Japanese). This Shotokan stance is used in katas, basic kicking techniques, etc. For example, Kokutsu Dachi is used in Shotokan Taikyoku Sandan, one of the entry-level katas for Shotokan.
