Mantis Claw

Mantis Claw – Praying Mantis Kung Fu Technique

Praying Mantis Kung Fu utilizes a technique known as the “Mantis Claw” or “Mantis Hook”. In this technique, a student’s hands are positioned to resemble mantis claws and are used for trapping (“sticky hands”), striking, blocking and parrying.

According to the School of Shaolin Kung Fu, the Mantis Claw is a “grabbing motion that derives all of its power from the wrist and forearm… The guarding hand is kept up and centered around the front and the other hand should remain free to execute the next move whether offensive or defensive”.

For other Kung Fu strikes (i.e. Tiger Claw), please visit the main martial arts Punches & Strikes section.
