Eye Gouges - Self-Defense Technique

This page provides the details of the self-defense technique known as eye gouges. This self-defense technique might be used if a person is trapped in the grip of an attacker.

Many of these self-defense targets (i.e. groin or eyes) are illegal in martial arts sparring competitions. However, they are useful in self-defense situations (i.e. rape prevention). These attacks on vital areas should only be used in life or death situations as they can severely injure an opponent.

In order to reduce the potential for accidents, many martial arts schools practice eye strikes against the eyes of BOB (Body Opponent Bags) versus "live" students. Or they practice against students who are wearing large plastic face shields in order to protect the student's eyes and face.

For other self-defense techniques against vital points (i.e. groin), please visit the main Vital Points section.
