Instructions for Shuri-Ryu Kata - Taikyoku Shodan (Taikyoku Ichi)

This page provides details to help you learn Shuri-Ryu Karate kata - Taikyoku Shodan. This kata is also known as Taikyoku Ichi. In Shuri-Ryu Karate, this is one of the first introductory katas used to teach beginners.

Written Instructions for Shuri-Ryu Kata - Taikyoku Shodan (Ichi)

  • Ready stance
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left low (downward) block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Turn right 180 degrees, right front stance, right low (downward) block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left low punch
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left low (downward) block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Step forward, left front stance, left low punch
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch, yell Kiai
  • Turn right 90 degrees, left front stance, left low (downward) block FYI - Shuri-Ryu Taikyoku Ichi/Shodan differs from the Shotokan Taikyoku because you turn right 90 degrees versus left 270 degrees. Nevertheless, you still end up at the same location.
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Turn 180 degrees, right front stance, right low (downward) block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left low punch
  • Turn left 90 degrees, left front stance, left low (downward) block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Step forward, left front stance, left low punch
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Turn right 90 degrees, left front stance, left low (downward) block
  • Step forward, right front stance, right low punch
  • Turn right 180 degrees, right front stance, right low (downward) block
  • Step forward, left front stance, left low punch
  • Return to ready stance
