Straight Arm Plank

Straight Arm Plank – Martial Arts Strength Exercise

This page looks at the strength training exercise known as a Straight Arm Plank. This isometric exercise helps core strength by working on the abs, lower back, etc. In turn, this improves rotational power (“torquing” power) and thus lead to stronger martial arts kicks and punches.

This core exercise is also known as a high plank, etc. For more advanced planks (i.e. Superman Plank), please visit the main Plank Exercises section.

With a straight arm plank, a person is resting on their hands and feet while maintain a straight body. Their arms are straight. Unlike a traditional plank, they do not rest on their forearms. The straight arm plank is like a stationary push-up.

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. If you have had an injury or are in pain, please see a doctor before starting any stretching or exercise program. For different exercises (i.e. crunches and sit-ups), please visit the main Martial Arts Strength Training section.
