Chito-Ryu Karate – Katas, Techniques, etc.
Chito-Ryu is one of the traditional styles of Karate. It was formed by Tsuyoshi Chitose, an Okinawan born in 1898.
Given Tsuyoshi Chitose’s experience as a doctor and Karate practitioner, he developed a powerful martial arts system that combined practical self-defense techniques with a focus on health benefits. According to the International Chito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation of Australia, “In 1946 Dr Chitose developed the Chito-Ryu system based on his lifetime of study as the 6th master of To-de (pre-cursor to modern day Karate), combining the strengths of Shuri no Te (now known as Shorin-Ryu) and Naha no Te (now known as Shorei-Ryu) with his knowledge of physiology.”
Beyond learning unarmed combat skills, Chito-Ryu students also practice with traditional martial arts weapons such as the Bo (staff), Tonfa and Nunchaku. Moreover, Chito-Ryu has its own unique katas such as Shihohai.
