Martial Arts Grappling Techniques (Beginner & Advanced)

This page provides detail about martial arts grappling techniques such as the Guillotine ChokeKimura Defense and Armbar from Guard. You should also visit the Judo Techniques page for additional grappling techniques (i.e. throws, pins and joint locks). Martial arts training is not just kicking and punching. Many martial arts styles and systems (such as Mixed Martial ArtsSambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) use grappling techniques in order to control or defeat their opponents. Therefore, many martial artists are learning submission techniques and counters in order to add a ground component to their traditional martial arts training. All of the techniques below include instructional videos to help you learn more about a specific grappling technique or counter/escape. In addition, a number of these techniques can be practiced at home via solo training.

Grappling and submission techniques should be only practiced under the supervision of a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. In addition, all martial arts techniques and training should be used safely and responsibly. Some of these grappling techniques are very dangerous (i.e. the Rear Naked Choke) if done improperly during training.
