List of Karate Techniques (Beginner & Advanced)

This page examines a wide range of Karate techniques. It provides video and/or written instructions for Karate kicks, punches, kata, kumite, grappling and much more. These techniques are used during training, self-defense situations, tournaments, etc.

The information on these pages and videos are meant to reinforce and supplement the instruction given at your Karate classes. To properly understand these techniques, you need to learn them from a Karate instructor who can provide you with an in-depth explanation of the technique, help correct your mistakes, answer your questions and detail how the technique should be utilized.

All martial arts techniques should only be practiced under the supervision of a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. In addition, all martial arts techniques should be used safely and responsibly.

  • Karate Kicks – This section provides information on Karate kicks such as Mawashi Geri (roundhouse kick) and Ushiro Geri (back kick).
  • Karate Punches & Hand Strikes – This section provides information on Karate punches & strikes such as Age Zuki (uppercut punch) and Haito Uchi (ridge hand strike).
  • Kata – Kata is a traditional technique used to teach students how to combine kicks, strikes, blocks, stances, etc. It is used frequently for solo training.
  • Blocks – This section covers Karate blocks such as Age-Uke (rising block).
  • Karate Grappling – While Karate is not known for grappling, some basic grappling techniques are practiced in select Karate schools. Karate grappling training includes such as throws (Nagi Waza), etc.
  • Kumite – This page covers sparring techniques & drills.
  • Karate Weapon Training – Kobudo weapons, Bo staff techniques, etc.
  • Hojo Undo – Traditional Karate strength training techniques.

Other Martial Arts – Many Karate students learn techniques from other styles in order to supplement their Karate training and/or to learn new techniques (i.e. advanced grappling) that are not taught at their Karate dojo. These section below cover techniques from Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Taekwondo, etc.
