Umbrella – Self-Defense Weapon of Opportunity
Since most martial artists do not carry traditional martial arts weapons (i.e. katana, bo staff, nunchaku, etc.) on the street, they must be ready to utilize weapons of opportunity in self-defense scenarios. Therefore, some of the most readily available “weapons” of opportunity include an umbrella, walking cane, chair, etc.
Without getting fancy, the best way to use an umbrella for self-defense is to use it like a light stick. It can be used to stab/poke, to swing/strike and to distract. An umbrella techniques are very similar to cane-based techniques.
Students should only practice martial arts self-defense techniques under the careful supervision of a trained martial arts instructor.
