World Oyama Karate Kata – Kihon Sono Ni

Written Kata Instructions

First of all, I have to mention that there is a particularity that must be understood for the kihon kata.
If you watch the video, you should notice a transition stance on most move followed with zenkutsu dachi,
gyaku tsuki. Therefore, this transition stance I will use in my description is similar to han kiba dashi at 45°
with the front leg standing on the ball of the foot.

Kihon Sono Ni

  • “Kihon Sono Ni, Yoi” – into fudo dachi.
  • Ichi: Extend your left leg to the left into transition stance and strike left uraken sayu ganmen uchi (ikite).
  • Pivot on your feet into zenkutsu dachi while striking chudan gyaku tsuki.
  • Ni: Perform mawatte and strike right uraken sayu ganmen uchi while you are into transition stance.
  • Pivot on your feet into zenkutsu dachi while striking chudan gyaku tsuki.
  • San: Pivot 90° to the left into han zenkutsu dachi, kamaete.
  • Chi: Kick right mae geri; step forward into right han zenkutsu dachi.
  • Go: Kick left mawashi geri; step forward and;
  • Roku: Immediately kick right ushiro geri;
  • Step forward into transition stance (right foot forward) and
  • strike right uraken sayu ganmen uchi.
  • Pivot on your feet into zenkutsu dachi while striking chudan gyaku tsuki – kiai.
  • Shichi: Perform mawatte into left han zenkutsu dachi, kamaete.
  • Hachi: Kick right mae geri; step forward into right han zenkutsu dachi.
  • Ku: Kick left mawashi geri; step forward
  • Jû: Immediately kick right ushiro geri;
  • Step forward into transition stance (right foot forward) and strike right uraken sayu ganmen uchi.
  • Pivot on your feet into zenkutsu dachi while striking chudan gyaku tsuki – kiai.
  • Ichi: Perform mawatte into left han zenkutsu dachi – okuri ashi, kamaete – kiai.
  • “Yame” – step back into fudo dachi.
